Immediately after installing SP2, the Security Center says the Windows Firewall is on and my broadband network connection has the locked symbol and it says that it's firewalled.
However, every time I subsequently turn on my computer, the network connection DOES NOT have the locked symbol and it DOES NOT say firewalled, even though the Security Center says the firewall is on.
I've reformatted and installed SP2 three times in recent days and this happens every time. Since I can only assume the Windows Firewall is not on, I'm using a third-party firewall until I can get this resolved.
Does anyone know of any way to correct this? I submitted the issue to MS but haven't heard back.
ern123 -- I hope this is not normal because if my broadband connection icon doesn't show that it's firewalled and the Security Center says it is, then there could be one heck of a security hole.
I suspect the only way to really check this is to temporarily turn off my third-party firewall and do a Shields Up test. At least that way I'd know whether or not the Windows Firewall is really working, even though the network connection doesn't say firewalled and the Security Center shows it to be on.
I'm reluctant to do this -- may take a day or so to get up the courage. I suppose if something goes wrong, I can always do a fourth reformat.
Is it a problem when windows Firewall is ON and at the same time 3rd party firewall also ON..:???
I'm using EZfirewall and still ON my windows firewall as well...and so far there's no problem at all...
Initially I was using sygate firewall and was not recognise my Security centre, so I uninstall and installed new EZfirewall and everythings back running smooth !
Me_Myself -- I don't run two firewalls at the same time. Simply put, when the Security Center says the Windows Firewall is on, the broadband connection icon under network connections does not indicate that it's firewalled nor is the locked symbol there. When I do run the third-party firewall, I turn off the Windows Firewall.
I just completed a series of Shields Up tests. When the Security Center says the Windows Firewall is on, even though the network icon doesn't indicate that it's firewalled, the firewall is on. My computer was shown to be in total stealth mode -- very reassuring.
Issue settled -- the firewall is working. Thanks to all for your comments.
cwil60 -- go to https://grc.com/x/ne.dll?bh0bkyd2 click proceed and follow directions for testing ports. The tests will let you know how effective your firewall is.
