XPS 8960, black screen
Hi,
I recently bought the new dell XPS desktop (8960), and since purchasing I've had an issue with a black screen. The PC starts up with the dell logo, and then after the logo it stops sending signals to the monitor.
I've had support work on me with this, it was first perceived to be a problem with the OS. An engineer came to install a fresh windows 11. When we got into the desktop, and started manually updating the drivers..it happened again.
Then it was hypothesized as a graphics card problem with how it responds to the latest drivers, so they were planning on replacing the motherboard for my PC. I ended up having the whole PC replaced. Got my new PC yesterday and the exact same problem.
I'm waiting for a response from support, but meanwhile I was wondering if anyone has had this happen, what the problem was, and how they fixed it?

My XPS8960 is scheduled to be delivered tomorrow. Configured with i7-13700K and AMD Radeon RX 6700 XT. Please tell me how yours is configured. Just hoping that your problem is not widespread with the 8960.

@Otim95 - If you have an add-in video card (AMD or NVidia), is your monitor is connected to the add-in card, not to the onboard Intel Graphics DisplayPort, correct...?
What port are you using on the add-in card and what port on the monitor? Any video port adapters being used?

No add-in video card, just Intel UHD Graphics.
Im using a the displayport in the PC and displayport to HDMI cable to connect PC to my monitor

Since the problem is common to both 8960s that you tried, I'm wondering if it could be an issue with the display port to HDMI conversion in the cable. If you can get (borrow?) a monitor with a DP input, it might be worthwhile to try it with a DP to DP cable.

@Otim95 - Have to agree with @modelman, which is why I asked about your video connections.
The onboard Intel Graphics DP port on the XPS 8960 is Dual-Mode DisplayPort 1.4. (Marked:
on back panel of XPS 9060.)
That means you don't want/need an active DP(PC)>HDMI(monitor) adapter. You need a passive DP(PC)>HDMI(monitor) adapter, which only changes the type of connector, without changing the video signal.
Also keep in mind video adapters typically only work in one direction. So you can't just turn them end/end and expect them to work.
Or, if your monitor has a DisplayPort input, just use a DP(PC)>DP(monitor) cable...

Thanks for clarifying what might be going on with my adapter. How do I know if its an active DP->HDMI or passive DP->HDMI?
My monitor only has HDMI input and USB-C (DP Alt mode) input. (From my comments to Joe and modelman) I've bought a couple of adapters to see if they work, they should be arriving tomorrow. One of them I'm trying is Displayport -> USB-C, and the other is another DP->HDMI with the hopes that it is indeed passive DP>HDMI (Joe confirmed it solved the problem for him).818

Bought this just now to test if it works, thanks. I'll try it tomorrow (as well as trying Displayport to USB-C)

Yeah I guess you're right, the only thing left is to focus on how it's connecting to the monitor.
I don't really have another DP input monitor I can borrow (and can't afford to buy one for the experiment lol), but I'm willing to try a different adaptor. My monitor has HDMI and also USB-C (DP Alt mode) input, so I've just bought a Displayport to USB-C to see if that works, ill test tomorrow.

Sounds like my problem form last year with the 8950 and internal graphics, tried multiple cables, this is the one that worked for Display port to HDMI monitor
