Data Migration

Dear All, I need to know the best way of migrating Data from one Clariion into another but I don't have SAN Copy. I will need a software that I can install into the host and start the migration. We are running Solaris 8 and 10, with Solaris Volume Manager and EMC powerpath. I am planning to present the second LUN from the CX4. Currently the two servers can see the CX300 LUN's but I need to migrate everything to CX4.

Regards,

T

SANCopy would have the best choice - you may talk to your local EMC contact to get the temporary license for SANCopy may be with a lesser cost only for the migration.

Anyway - if that is not the case, you have to use any Host based copy/migration tool. You may use rsync (standard UNIX tools) or any other host based copy tool like Secure Copy or Robo Copy if they are available on Solaris (not sure though).

    Thanks,
    Sandip

HAve you taken a look at securecopy.  We've used it for alot of copy and migration jobs and I believe it supports Solaris

Secure Copy from ScriptLogic is for windows only. You could use SVM to setup mirror of your slices (not sure about the root file system). I second Sandip's recommendation for SANCopy, so much easier to migrate with block based copy. Work your TC a little bit, hint that you will buy V-Max next

You are correct Securecopy is only for Windows.  Agreed SanCopy would be the best solution.  But, Could he use a Clone ?

SANCopy or MirrorView would be the only way to make a  'clone' on the other array.

What about PowerPath Migration Enabler? I know it is available for Linux, AIX, and Windows, not sure about Solaris.

you mean like Clariion clone ? Nah ..clone/snap only works within the same frame. You can take a clone/snap of source LUN and copy that to another array using SANCopy.

I was going to suggest the same thing myself. It is now built in and licensed for free (with a basic PowerPath license) with PowerPath. I haven't had the chance to try it out myself yet, but we are looking at using it for an upcoming migration.

Fortunately I've only got cluster in one part of our environment (they cause VERY annoying issues just by being clusters and I think we have had more failures on the clusters than on the single servers BECAUSE of the cluster configuration... don't get me started).

I'm looking forward to using PPME soon as we have always done our migrations the "hard way". AIX hasn't been bad because we could use the volume manager to facilitate online migration, but all other OSes have been host based migrations with LUNs from source and target available at the same time.

I just received our license recently for it and was going to use it for the migration of a SQL cluster from a CLARiiON to a DMX, but decided to go with SANcopy instead due to some limitations in PPME. The SQL cluster is active/active and the PPME guides state that to migrate a cluster only one host should be online. That is a deal killer right there. For a simple LUN by LUN migration it seems like a good fit, but for this particular cluster both instances are very high i/o and each database is over 2TB in size. So something with more thorughput that wouldn't put a load on the hosts was a better fit.

Microsoft clusters can be a bit dodgy if you don't know all the tricks and configurations to keeping them happy. I have been deploying and supporting Microsoft clusters since the NT4 days so I have worked it out by now and support a lot of Microsoft clusters. No cluster issues here ;-)

I have been really happy with SANcopy for Cx to CX and Cx to DMX migrations. It has worked very well for us and has not required anything of the host besides the masking.
