InsightIQ Migration

We have a need to migrate our InsightIQ VM from a CentOS VM to RHEL OS VM.. Our current InsightIQ instance runs on centOS with datastore  on NFS mount from one of our Isilon clusters. In order to migrate it to the new RHEL VM, I plan on  following this process:

1. Install InsightIQ on the new RHEL VM.

2. Stop InsightIQ on the old VM.

3. Unmount the data store file systems on the old VM

4. NFS export the same datastore to the new VM.

5. Add the monitored clusters to the new InsightIQ instance

6. Configure the old NFS datastore on the new instance

7. Re-start InsightIQ on the new VM.

Will this work or do I need to do export/import of the datastore? I could not find any documentation related to this.

I have never done insightIQ migration before. I want to make sure we don't lose the historical data after the migration.

Any ideas will be helpful,

Thanks

I doubt that this is going to work and there's a bunch on the local disk that is also important (custom reports, etc.).  It's also fussy about the exact directory path name.  When you add a cluster in your new instance, the directory name will likely change and you won't be able to find the old data.

You also want to ensure, of course, that your beginning and ending versions are identical.  If you upgrade going to your new release, you could really be out of luck.

If it was me, I'd point the new instance at the old instance and tell it to copy the data.  Then manually copy in the old custom reports if you have any.

Thank you Ed. yes, they will be both the same version: 4.0.1.

What do you mean by "point the new instance at the old instance and tell it to copy the data"? How do you do that?

    Hi Dan,

As Ed said, IIQ is indeed very fussy about the directory structure of its datastore.

    Your best bet is to:

    1. Export IIQ datastore from your existing installation.  Keep that export in a safe place.

    2. Start your new instance of IIQ from RHEL, but DON'T ADD YOUR CLUSTER yet.

    3. From the new instance, choose datastore IMPORT.  During the import procedure, you can check the box that says "start monitoring", while providing the insightiq user credentials in the import process.

    4. When the import is complete, your new IIQ instance will automatically start monitoring your cluster.

Hope this helps.  Feel free to reach out to your Isilon SE for help.

    Thanks.

Thank you Rob! I appreciate it.

Can you please point me to a document or a KB article on how to do the import and export of the datastore? I could not find any documentation on it. It is our first time doing this and want to make sure we use the correct steps.

    Thanks again!

    Rob,

I found the export/Import procedures on the GUI. I was looking for some kind of cli commands.

One question I have is do we need to stop the old InsightIQ instance before I do the import on the new? Or does that even matter?

    Thanks

    Hi Dan,

Since you are on IIQ version 4.0.1, it is actually quite easy to do.

The specific procedures are on pages 33 to 35 in the IIQ User Guide -- http://www.emc.com/collateral/TechnicalDocument/docu70283.pdf

I just reviewed the export/import datastore procedures in this doc.  There are no pretty pictures in the user guide, but the instructions are valid.

For more articles about IIQ, this page has a good index of various resources: InsightIQ - Isilon Info Hub

    Hi Dan,

There are no CLI commands in InsightIQ for importing and exporting the IIQ datastore (database).  The CLI commands available in InsightIQ are for "exporting" specific FSA or perf data to CSV files.

You could choose to "stop monitoring" from the old IIQ instance, but it doesn't really matter.  Just don't go stopping the IIQ application, otherwise your GUI method of exporting the datastore won't be available.

    Thanks.
