Dell 944 All-in-one printer

Apparently this printer (the Dell 944 All-in-one printer) does not have a Linux driver (please correct me if I'm wrong). Is there any way to get the printer to work on Linux? I am currently using Ubuntu 7.04.

I searched google, there is a lot of results. Since I don't have that printer I can't try any of them. Anytime you have a problem type it in google. Try Dell 944 ubuntu.

I did search google before posting, (and have again thinking I had missed something), but everyone seems to be asking the same questions- when will the driver come out. I have read that Dell will be installing Ubuntu on systems (?) and so I thought maybe they had developed a driver for this printer. If not, if anyone else has found a way to get around it for not (even JUST print, not scan etc.) It would be nice not to have to go to windows every time I want to print something.

There is a website that is a general printing site for Linux called http://openprinting.org which actually states what the current status of it working with Linux is and why. You can select which manufacturer from the list and which model number. It would appear that Dell printers are akin to winmodems, which require special software on the OS-side in order to operate. Some winmodems do work in linux, so it is not entirely out of the question and entirely possible that these printers could work in Linux, whether it's Ubuntu or any other distribution. The question is, will Lexmark be able to extend its new license on its website to work with Dell printers?

From when I researched a Dell AIO 922 printer, there are no Linux drivers for any of the AIO printers, and won't be unless the makers like Dell release some. A site I came across went into a lot of technical detail, but it boils down to them all using non-standard and proprietary protocols. You would think that Dell would release Linux drivers for their current printers at least as soon as they start selling systems with Ubuntu on them; but probably only the particular models they may offer in a bundle. If we're lucky, they've set up a team to make drivers available for not only all current printers, but older models as well, and hopefully ports of the Lexmark software they use. The latter is a long-shot, however.
