Display driver has stopped responding

I purchased an Alienware  computer around 20th of december last year, recieved it 12th of January,  so I have not had it that long. I use it to game more or less, I don't play many games at the moment, I play World of Warcraft, and League of Legends

My issue is that when I'm playing World of Warcraft, for no apparent reason my screen goes black for 5 seconds and I'm returned to the desktop with a warning displayed in bottom right corner saying "Display driver nvlddmkm stopped responding and has successfully recovered." I'm unable to get back into the game for around 5 minutes or even worse in some situations where It's necessary to restart the computer.

It doesn't constantly happen, I have a list of the events and it ranges from 2-3 days sometimes without it occurring.

I have searched for a solution to this problem but I'm unable to find one, various people suggest different things that may have worked for them, so I have attempted quite a few and every time I think I have solved the issue, a day or two later I get knocked out of my game with the same warning in bottom right corner.

I'm not sure what the issue is, I fail to see it being an overheated graphics card .. I think it's something to do with either my operating system or just a defective graphics card.

I'm no expert on computers far from it, which is why I decided to spend as much money as I could on a computer rather than attempt to build one.. but this issue is a deal breaker for me, since I'm a complete technophobe and don't fancy trying other peoples so called "remedy" that worked for them to fix the issue.

Monitor: Alienware OptX AW2310

Graphics card: NVIDIA GeForce GTX580

Operating system: Windows 7 professional

If posting other info would help, I'll be happy to do so.

Appreciate any help.

I had the same issues and for me it was overheating. Download MSI Afterburner and watch how high your vid card temps go. If it seems out of the normal, set a custom fan profile to have it run at like 50% all the time, then go into the command center and get that big intake fan spinning faster too, because with the default settings its almost useless. Im not sure what the max temps of the GTX580 are, but you should set the fans to run at 90% once they get within 10-15 degrees of that mark.

I lowered the temps on my GTX590 by close to 15 degrees celcius by doing this and those errors went away.

I should also further mention, goto Nvidias website and download the latest drivers. Most people suggest downloading Driversweeper and clearing your drivers that way first. If your not comfortable doing that, when your installing the new drivers through Nvidias tool, click custom install and click the perform clean install box. It basically sweeps all the drivers for you, reboots the computer then starts the driver install.

Well I installed the latest drivers, the issue still happens.

I got in contact with tech support, they did some standard nonsense tests, had me download Techpowerup GPU-Z 0.5.8  and said, we'll call you back in a few days, never got a call back.. and i'm still frustrated that I payed 2k for a computer which had this existing issue with it from moment I purchased it.

I think I'll just return it and never buy one again.

Have you taken out the card and tried reseatting it? Just an idea and I would like to know what the temps are for the card.
