Don't know, the only way to find out if the processor works, is to try it.

A trick I learned is to use a ballpoint pen. Oven the pen and remove the refill and spring. Put the hole in the barrel where the point would come out over a bent pin and gently use the barrel to straighten it, being careful not to bend any adjacent pins.

It's a personal preference, you can use either, I just think that the thermal compound makes a better heat conductor, between the heatsink and processor.
