External Hard Drive

I have a Dell 8100.  I'm thinking about getting an external hard drive in preparation of getting a new pc.  The problem is my 8100 doesn't have firewire or USB 2.0, just the older USB.   I was curious if a USB 2.0 drive would run on my older USB.  I don't care if it's slower, just as long as I can transfer the data.  Let me know if any of you have done this and if there's a drive you'd recommend.

USB is backwards compatiable, you will not have any problem outside of getting old while USB 1.0 does its job, USB 1.0 works approximataly 1/40 the speed of USB 2.0

That's a good price for the WD external. I'm using a 1999 Dimension XPS-T600 with a Maxtor 40GB USB drive. Works great. You could get a PCI USB 2.0 card for your computer and gain speed.

There were issues related to using Norton Ghost 2003 on PCI card-attached drives if there were USB 1.1 controllers on the system (not sure if this has been resolved), but data backup should be fine.

BTW, Ghost 2003 is great for doing full-disk images to USB or Firewire drives, if you are so inclined.

Naw.  When I get the new pc I'm going for a clean install.  I'm just using the new external to move the important files I don't want erased.  It'll come in hand for storing my MP3s and videos I've collected as well.  I thought about adding a USB 2.0, but I'm not putting any more money into this PC.  AUG/SEPT I buy a new PC.  Just in time for Doom 3 and Half Life 2.

Yea I read that.  If they caused this long delay of Half Life 2, they get what they deserved.  Game looks great from the previews I've seen.  If you haven't seen the E3 movie of Half Life 2 check it out http://www.fileplanet.com/files/140000/140589.shtml .  Here's the hard drive I purchased http://www.newegg.com/app/viewProductDesc.asp?description=22-144-334&depa=0 .  It only has a 2mb buffer, but I'm just using it for MP3s, videos, patches, and such.
