Firewire -- HELP!
Hi, The other day I inserted my newly bought Firewire adapter into a PCI slot so that I will finally be able to transfer video from my video camera to my PC. Although that adapter is in there, nothing has shown up on my computer that tells me that it has successfully installed the driver and whatnot. I have a Windows XP (dell dimension 5100), and therefore it should automatically detect the new hardware and install all that needs to be installed - which it hasn't. I have no clue why. For some more background information, a few days ago when I opened my PC up for the first time so I could install this Firewire adapter, there were no available PCI slots, so I decided to remove my dial-up adapter, and in it's place put the Firewire adapter. I turned on my computer and it didn't acknowledge any new hardware, so I thought it might have been because I didn't uninstall the previous driver that was in there, which would have been the dial-up. So I opened up the control panel, and removed that particular modem, though that didn't seem to do anything. If anyone knows of any reason as to why it's not working, please post! Any help will be GREATLY appreciated. I really want this to work...

I didn't uninstall a dial-up driver before removing it, I had originally thought that I had an extra PCI slot but I didn't. So I took it out, replaced it with the firewire adapter, then one friend said that I should have gotten rid of that particular modem for the dial-up adapter that I removed. So I went into the control panel and removed the modem, yet I'm not all too experienced with computers, so is there something else I have to do first regarding the dial-up?

i would also try putting the firewire card in another slot. and if you can, download the drivers from the manufacturer and install them.but i see no reason why the card wouldn't work in the one you placed it in. unless you didn't uninstall the drivers for the dial-up card...this is what i would do:download any manufaturer drivers for the firewire card (as they would be the latest version) and place it on your desktop. uninstall any drivers related to the dial-up card you just removed. shut down. plug in firewire card. start up. if windows detects the firewire card and asks to find driver, select canel. run the firewire card driver from your desktop and that should be it.discostu668

when you say you removed the modem, did you simply disable it or did you select uninstall in your device manager? have you tried starting all over again (i.e. set your computer up as it was prior to plugging in the firewire card)? you need to get rid of everything related to the previous card first before you plug in the new one.it could be entirely possible that the firewire card is DOA, but it just sounds to me as though your computer still thinks theres a dial-up card plugged in. hopefully someone with more knowledge will step in and offer a better, less complicated solution!- I never dealt with uninstalling anything in the device manager, I wasn't aware I had to do that since I'm not quite familiar with dealing with these types of situations. I suppose I just disabled it. Nonetheless, I actually just got done putting the dial-up card back in and taking out the firewire as you recommended. Makes sense to start off again from where it was in the first place, now that I know the mistake made. I'll see if I can try again tomorrow, in which case, when it comes time to uninstall the driver I will go to the device manager, I know that much! I assume I will go where it says "Modems -> Intel(R) 537EP V9x DF PCI Modem" if I want to get rid of the driver. Once that's done, do you know if there's something else I will have to do? "hopefully someone with more knowledge will step in and offer a better, less complicated solution! " No need to say that, I'm positive that this is what the issue was. Thanks for all your help!

yes, go to where it says "Modems -> Intel(R) 537EP V9x DF PCI Modem", double-click that. it'll open up another window and then select the drivers tab and select uninstall (it should be the last option). once that's done, shut down and switch cards. all you would have to do after that is install any driver for the firewire card.in theory, that should work.discostu668
