Having scanner problems

I cannot get my scanner to scan and send/print/save photos, documents, etc. :smileymad: I've tried reinstalling, I've checked all the connections, but when I try to scan I get a message that the scanner is in use by some other program.  I usually use Acrobat PhotoDeluxe Home Edition 3.0 and it works fine, but now, nothing.  So much for my idea of spending this evening scanning photos, etc into the PC!  :smileymad:  When I run the scanner test, it'll either say that said test was successful or unsuccessful depending on whether or not I'm in a given program.  I usually get the failure message when I'm Acrobat or trying to use Microsoft's own scanning software.  I've also tried Page Manager, with the same results.  I'm going nuts!  What's going on?  Thanks.

You didn't post any system specs or scanner model, just that "it doesn't work".

Does the scanner work with the scanner software provided by the scanner manufacturer?  Most other programs use the "TWAIN" compliant software and usually the scanner's drivers/software.  If that has become corrupted then it probably won't work.  Also, make sure you only have one program running that is accessing or trying to access the scanner.

Suggest you uninstall the scanner software, disconnect the scanner from the PC, restart Windows and then do a new install of the scanner and scanner software and do not connect the scanner until the installation program tells you to.

If this doesn't help, post back with more information, including PC Model Number, Operating system, scanner model, etc.

I will try that.  It worked before--using the PC's software and not its own.  No problem, but I didn't have copier function.  Now when I run the scanner test, I get a message that the scanner is in use by some other program.  I'll try your suggestion and with great good luck that will work. For the record, I have Windows XP and yes I have the additional service pack.  I did have Windows ME and everything worked fine, but now  I've got XP.  One other question:  what should the compatability be?  When I check 'properties' I have a choice of Win95; Win98/ME; NT and Windows 2000; right now it's on Windows 2000.
