Go to SolutionInstalling more RAM memory
Hi, I just purchased a Dell XSP 8900 and decommissioned my Dell XSP 8500. My question is can I use the RAM memory chips in my old 8500 in my new 8900? Also, can I use the old hard drive and DVD read/write drive?
Thanks

sell your old system without the HDD on eBay and you'll easily get $200 for a core i5 and 300+ for a core i7.
If it will boot to BIOS, take a picture.
Take a picture of it running windoze before you pull the HDD.
Anyway, yes the HDD will work. in your 8900, as will the optical drive but since your 8900 also has an ODD, why move it?

RAM - probably not.
XPS 8900 uses DDR4 RAM, 2133 MHz
XPS 8500 uses DDR3 RAM, up to 1600 MHz
So even if you could mix/match DDR3 with DDR4, the RAM would all run at the speed of the slowest so your 2133 MHz RAM would be slowed down.
HDD: probably OK, but you won't be able to boot from it unless you reinstall Windows
DVD: probably OK
