My son installed a game called "WWII Battlestrike".  When trying to run the game for the first time, an intro video scene plays but then returns to the desktop with the following error message:

Exception:  Battlestrike_en critical error: Could not create device

After consulting the game manufacturers website, valusoft.com, the problem may be the graphics card is not up to date.  The card is an

Intel 82865G Graphics Controller

Driver Date: 9/20/05

Driver version: 6.14.10.4396

 

The Dell website has a driver download of V 6.14.10.4363 with a release date of 9/14/05, which is earlier that the date of mine.

The Intel website has a driver version 14.17 with a date of 9/28/05.

It would seem that my version is more current than the version on the Dell website but not as current as the version on the Intel website. 

Why does Dell not have the same version as Intel? 

Does Dell modify the driver in any way that would not be in the Intel version and therefore make it unwise to use the Intel download? 

The bottom line is "Is it OK to install the driver from the Intel website and not cause additional problems?"
