problem loading games

For the first time tonight, we cannot play games we have been able to play. The error reads" could not initialize hardware."

The program starts to load, then the screen goes back to the desktop with the above error message.

Have Dimension 4300 and have had since November. Never had problems until today.

Have you tried completely shutting down your system with the power switch, waiting a minute or so, and restarting. This often solves many problems like this. If it doesn't work, post back with the exact text of the error message and maybe someone here can help. Also tell us what version of Windows you are running.

Yes, I have tried powering down and restarting.

    The exact error message is:

    Could not initialize your hardware!

Please refer to the Troubleshooting Guide for more information.

The error is in a widows box, with red X in top right corner. and a button to select ok in the bottom center.

I do not know which hardware it is speaking of and I cannot find a troubleshooting guide for the game. (THis is Monkey Island.) I have also tried Risk II and get no message at all. It just does not ever load.

I am using Windows XP. Dimension 4300.

    Thanks.

It seems my problem is in the Direct X. I ran a diagnostic of dx and it failed the Direct X. Windows XP has this feature where it downloads updates for you automatically. I wonder if this messed us up. But anyway, how do I fix it?

I took the easy way out. I found a restore system settings button where I could choose a date on the calendar when the computer worked well, and it would restore my config back to that day. So I did it until it work. Direct X is now working and Risk II is working.

    Thanks for your help.
