Problems after clean re-install...help
I did a clean install with the Dell recovery disk on my sons computer today. Then I installed the 815 chipset driver. I did not know what to install next so called and talked to a Dell tech and she said she would send me the correct modem to install to my e-mail and I could download it to a floppy and install it on his computer.....didn't seem to work as there is no modem on his computer and of course we can't dial up to get online with NO modem. I called back several times and cannot get any help....and the wait is sooo long. I have tried so many different things. Why is the modem not on the resource disk that came with his computer? Is there anyone out there that can tell me what I can do . It is hard to do anything not being able to get online or even to my internet server

Maybe I am not being clear.......I downloaded it to a floppy on my computer then I took the floppy to his computer and it seemed to download but the modem is not there when I try to set up his internet server.858

I'm a little confused yet. What was the name of the file she had you download? And when you downloaded it from her email message to you, where did you specify that it should be downloaded to when you clicked on it - your Desktop or a specific folder where you download files or what? And you do have the actual modem installed on your sons computer, right?
Also, what operating system are you running on your sons computer?

So you installed the modem driver the tech emailed you onto your sons computer, right. But your also telling me that he doesn't have a modem installed in it, right?858

Yes ..she knew I would have to come home to download it to the floppy disk and that is what I did and it looked like it downloaded but the modem is not showing up anywhere and when I go to try and set up my internet server it says there is no modem.858

Just guessing, but I think the tech thought she could email you the modem driver file to the computer/email address from wherever you are posting these messages from. You could then copy the modem driver file to a floppy disk and then install it on your sons computer.

I re-read the tech instructions to you once again. Siimply copy the file that is on the floppy disk to your C:\ drive, probably labeled (Local Disk C:). Remove the floppy disk. The open Explorer (Right click Start then click Explorer and then click on your (Local Disk C:).
In the right window, you should see the file name that you just copied there and double click it. It will then extract the driver where it belongs.

I tried that and the modem is NOT shown.

I do not think my last reply came through......... the file name she had me download is..........Ath04_98se with these directions...Down load the file into the C:\directory (root) of the hard disk drive. From Windows 98 click on the StART button and select RUN from the start menu. Type in C:\Ath04_98.exe in the command line area and click OK. the driver files will extract into the C:\Dell\Driver\49XJC directory. Follow the directions in the readme.htm file to install the updated driver.
She also said for me to put it on the desktop and then double click on it to get it in the c drive. My son has a Dell 4100 98se. No I do not think there is a modem on it........when I try to connect my dial up with internet server it says.....there is no modem
