8200 Power Charging Problem

A couple of weeks ago, while I'm charging the batteries, my Inspiron 8200 started making a pretty loud squealing/hissing noise that sounds like it's coming from the area where the AC Adapter is plugged into the laptop.

I have two batteries, the problem happens when either one or the other or both are plugged in.

Generally the problem appears to be worst when the batteries are discharged most.

Many times, after hearing the noise for a while the AC Adapter blows it's internal circuit/fuse and the green light on it goes out. If I unplug it for a few seconds and then plug it back in, it starts to work again. Usually I can perform this cycle enough to get it fully charged again.

Once it's fully charged or if I remove both batteries, I hear no bad noises and the laptop runs fine on A/C.

I'd tried replacing the AC Adapter, but I get the same results.

Just to try to rule out some sort of home electrical problem, I tried it at an outlet I know is on another circuit and I got the same thing. I haven't tried it at another location yet though, but I doubt that's the problem.

Any thoughts on what the problem could be? I couldn't find others with this type of issue via searching.

Anything else I could try? It's closing in on 5 years old, so I'd rather not put too much more money into it. I've done quite a bit of work with it to keep it running this long and it still serves my computing needs, but if it's something that's going to be expensive to fix, it's probably time to put it to rest (or I can just pass it on for someone to use it as a desktop without batteries).

Thanks!

Reseat, and if that does not work, replace, the DC power board.

The board often comes unseated - it is worth trying to reseat it.

Here's a source for the part:

Do you think that if it's just unseated, I could see these symptoms or do you think it'd be more likely that the batteries wouldn't charge at all?

You do think it's higly likely that this is the cause of my problems? Sure makes sense to me since this board seems to be for battery charging and not running off AC and that's what my probelm is.

So by unseat, you mean follow the process on that page you gave and basically take the board out and put it back in just as if I was replacing it?

Thanks for the help with this.

By reseat, you mean what? Open the whole thing up and pull out this board and then it back in? Probably not worth not having the part on hand and risk having to take apart the laptop twice.

So this board is only used to charge the battery and not run on AC?

It'd makes sense then as I only have this problem during charging, not went running off the AC with fully charged (or no) batteries.

This looks like a pretty complex operation, but something I could handle (I've already replaced the screen hinge, which is a pretty decent task).

What are the odds you think this will fix the problem?

Any suggestions on a good place to find this board at a reasonable price?

Ok. I did the whole reseat thing. Wasn't such a bad job. Much of it's been apart before.

It didn't appear loose, but I did take it off, blow on it and try to clean with a little alcohol.

Powered back up with one battery in that was down around 30%, so far I'm at 59% and I don't think I've had a problem yet. I thought I heard something briefly, but maybe it was the fan, definitely nothing like it was before when it was obvious there was a problem.

It does seem to be charging very slowly, but I can't say for sure if it's slower than before and it is charging, so I guess that part is ok.

I think I'd have had the problem by now, but I'm definitely reserving further judgement until I've charged it a couple of times.

Thanks again and I'll update here either way.

If the batteries are original, they're long past their replace-by date - -I would replace the battery/batteries first.

No go on the fix. Just reseating it didn't help.

The noise started up again now once I ran both batteries down a bit and started to charge.

You think it's worth getting a replacement DC power board? Is that very likely to be the problem?

Nah, I'm a few batteries in by now. Both are original Dell. One working fine, one not holding the charge so well.

Problem happens if one, the other or both batteries are in. I don't think it's a battery problem.

I really just don't want to spend another $40 on this DC board if it's not likely to fix the problem.

Well, it's not an electricity problem as I brought the laptop to another location today.

I'm pretty sure I've tested enough to know it's not a problem with one battery or the other or one battery bay or the other. If both batteries are bad, I'd really have no way to know that then, but I'd say chances aren't so great of that.

I've bid on a DC charging board on Ebay. I'll take my chances that it's not defective rather than spend $40 for a new board.

It definitely sounds like this charging board, since the batteries (at least one does) work while discharging fine and everything works great on AC only or fully charged batteries (and I already replaced the AC Adapter).

    Any other thoughts?

Hmm.that's interesting. I doubt I've tried charging with the computer off.

For you, it does still make the bad noise while the computer is off though? So that could still mean it's the charging board. If it charged perfectly while the power was off, I'd be more worried about it being that.

I guess I'll find out later this week.
