cd rom stopping boot up
I have an inspiron 1200. A few weeks back when trying to boot the computer, an error message came up showing no bootable drives. went into bios, and found there was no drives listed. Tried a new hard drive, didn't fix the problem. Tried the old hard drive in a different dell laptop, worked fine, so i ruled that out. got a new cdrw/dvd drive, put that in didn't fix the problem. took the cd drive out tried to boot with just the hard drive, and it worked fine.
I tried loading the bios patches, and problem still there. did the whole go into bios, turned on caps, scroll, and num locks, did the alt e, alt f, (got the beep) alt b. with the cd rom out i ran the diagnostic tools, (since the cd rom was out it also ran the extended version that only took about an hour), and found no problems.
after all this I still have the same problem, please help me!!!
- In bios with the cd drive installed, nothing shows up for primary master, or secodary master. I tried it with no cd in it, also tried it with an xp cd, a dell cd, but nothing happens.In the boot order I originaly had 1 cd, 2 hard drive. I have also just put the hard drive as the only bootable device, still no luck. even tried the cd rom as the only bootable disk, again using the xp cd, and also dells sys recovery cd's but still no luck.
- It almost sounds like all the other controllers are disabled. What hapens if you remove the HD and use the CD-Rom as the only drive? You have tried to select in bios manually the cd-rom drive? Do you have plug & Play enabled in bios? Maybe if so select no and if no is already selected then select yes and see what happens.
- When the hard drive is out and the cd rom is in it is still not listed in the bios. I tried a new one that I just bought this week, same thing, they are not seen in the bios.I cant select anything manualy, nor can I change the plug n play option. this is because i cant manualy change the device settings (per bios) and i couldnt find anything relating to the plug n play. This has the newer dell bios on it.
- Well I have to admit I am stumped on this one. Don't make sense. However I read in another post or 2 where there might be a virus involved with this. I don't know anymore other than I saw some post. Very hard to do anything without seeing the options yourself.

Check support.dell.com if your system has a bios update.
