Failure Configuring Windows Updates
I have had the same outcome now for five days in a row. I use the automated windows update, and have done so for years (10+). On the Tuesday night update all the updates were downloaded. On start-up the next morning the update went through to 15% and then the message "Failure Configuring Windows Updates" was sent and then the 10 minute process of backing out the changes began. This process has repeated itself every morning for the last five days. The time to startup Windows is now nearly 20 minutes. I tried to decifer the answers provided on a Microsoft Forum with no success. I only was able to determine that I was not the only Windows user having this problem.
I am very reluctant to turn off the auto update feature in Windows 7 so, I thought I would seek out help from Dell first. Any help in getting by this update glitch so that I can keep Windows 7 up to date would be greatly appreciated. I have a one year old Dell Inspiron 15 Dual Core Laptop. I run the Windows 7 64 bit OS. As far as I know all previous updates to that system have been made. I did take a two week break from using the system from late July to August 12.

Hi there- I've had the same/similar issue on my XPS 8300 for the past few days. It gets to 15% and then says "Reverting changes. Shutting down" and the PC reboots itself and then works fine. When I shut down, it installs the same 8 updates so feel like I'm trapped in a cycle too!
As suggested by ejn63 I ran the F12 diagnostic at powerup- yielded no problems. I also ran the iOLO System Checkup via the Dell website and that found a number of problems including "one or more of your hard drives has signs of corruption". Fortunately, my pc is just within the 12 month warranty so have logged a call with Dell. Will update when I have a fix...

Hi ThirdLaptop ,
If you have tested the Hard Drive as suggested by ejn63 and confirmed that there is no issue, more likely the installed updates are causing problems during configuration at the start up. A ‘System restore’ to a known good date when the system was working can fix this issue. You can try System Restore from Windows Recovery Console.
Please follow the steps mentioned below.
For your information, System restore will not delete any personal data; however it will delete any programs, windows updates or any other updates that took place recently. For example, if you are selecting the restore point to be the 15th of August, any programs installed to date after the 15th of August will be removed.
I hope this helps. Please do write back in case you need any further assistance on the same.
Thanks & Regards
