Inspiron 1545 Beep Code
I have run the diagnostic on my Dell 1545 laptop. I get the following message: DST Short Test FAIL 2000-0146. I also get the following beep code: 1 Beep followed by 4 beeps followed by 6 beeps. I would really love to understand the beep system.

You need two things that may result in a decision that a new system is a better idea:
The beep code means the mainboard is toast (this is not an inexpensive thing to replace -- figure on about $200-250 for the part, plus labor if you don't replace it yourself), and
The error code refers to a faulty hard drive, which, while inexpensive to replace ($50-100) also means a complete reload of the OS and everything else.
Add the two together and you have a significant percentage of what a new system will cost, with a new warranty vs. 90 days at best on a repair.
