Hi! I'm a total total novice and i have a Dell laptop that has worked wirelessly with virtually no problems.. of course the other day the connection got dropped and i cannot reconnect to the wireless network.. everything i try just won't work. I'm sure there's a simple solution but I have no idea what to do.. i can get on the internet on the desktop but the laptop just won't work.. please help!

Hi there, try rebooting the wireless router/access point and see if that helps (unplug the router for a couple of seconds or so and plug it in again - then wait until all the lights stop flashing). If that fails, locate the wireless LAN connection icon normally found in the taskbar, bottom right near the clock. Open this up and see if it lists any wireless connections. You may have to manually select it by double clicking on the connection name which is associated with your access point. It may ask you for security settings in which case you will have to access the setup page from your desktop or wired connection.

If you have ZoneAlarm on your laptop (and not your desktop?), you may be a victim of a known conflict with one of this week's "security" updates from Microsoft. This caused ZoneAlarm's firewall to cut off internet access. Info from ZoneAlarm about how to deal with this is at:

    http://download.zonealarm.com/bin/free/pressReleases/2008/LossOfInternetAccessIssue.html

Of course, this doesn't apply if you don't have ZoneAlarm, you didn't get the Microsoft update via Automatic Updates or if your problem is just connecting to your wireless router and not onward to the internet.
