Unsuccessful startup

I have been having problems with my Inspiron 8100. Just before my contract ran out, it was serviced by Dell. The problem supposedly was with the service board (motherboard?).
Lately it has run erratically. Frequently it would not boot up. It would come up with the message...primary hard disk not found.   Fixed optical disk not found.

After shutting down and rebooting several times it would restart and run fine as long as I had it powered up.

For several weeks I had it shut off completely and when I tried rebooting, I am back to square one with the same message...primary hard disk not found. Fixed optical disk not found.

I'd appreciate any suggestions to help me understand what is going on.

Thanks

Run the Dell diagnostics after reseating the drives.

The hard drive may be failing, so back up when you can.

I've had many problems booting my Inspiron 2200 laptop.  The boot just won't complete i.e. no error messages.  I have to force a power off and attempt a reboot.  See my post for the details of my problem which sounds similar but different.
