2408WFP picture too sharp
I just received a 2408WFP and it has this problem: picture is too sharp. Extra sharpness makes fonts look too thin and causes white shadows to appear in some cases (thin fonts in grey background). If I lower sharpness to 25%, picture is too soft and in 50% it's too sharp, adjustment is too course to get the sharpness right. I'm using DVI with NVidia 8600 card. I have also compared (in clone mode and also separately) with 2407WFP-HC and it does not have this problem. I have also tested with another computer with a different video card, still the same problem. (If I use ClearType, it mostly masks this problem but I don't want to use ClearType)
So what is wrong with the 2408WFP? Is this going to be fixed in later revisions or should I just return the monitor and get something else?

Same problem here. The value of 50 is too high and 25 is too low. On fine details (mainly low-size font... for example Arial 8px or 9px) with high contrast the sharpness made a shadow around the font. A fine 'step' regulation would probably solve the problem at all since a good value would be around 35-40 but it's not selectable.1119

Maybe the sharpness value is variable adjustable via service menu's Register Adjust setting, but I think Dell won't tell us how it's done.

I have a number of issues with my 2408 WFP:
1) Insufficient sharpness control
2) Uneven backlight (very noticeable with dark grey background tints) panel is lighter on left than right
3) Rainbow effect on white backgrounds
4) Backlight bleed on corners (mainly top left and left side)
5) Red halo around text on grey/black background (related to sharpness i think)
6) screen is brighter left than right
Note: This is my second 2408 following RMA of first. This panel is slightly better, but as you've probably gathered i am not very happy with this one either ?
My question is:
Are there any revisions in pending to address these problems ?
If I change the monitor again am i likely to see any improvement ?
Should i just forget the DELL and buy a Samsung ?

I say never buy a Revision 00 Monitor when it first comes out. Wait about 6 months until they fix the problems before you get one. Wait until Revision 02 or higher.1119

hehehe that's a good one......What happened to the 2407WFP-HC ? Where is revision 01 ? it was repalce by the 2408 who also happened to have more problems !1119

The 2407WFP-HC does not have Revision A01 and might have been discontinued.605

I've had my Dell 2408WFPb (Rev A00) for a few days now. The first thing I noticed was the sharpness of text when web browsing, it has a light fringeing / halo around it. This is really noticable with black text on grey / lightly coloured backgrounds (black on white seems okay, although some people have stated this is a problem too).
First port of call was the sharpness setting in the On Screen Display, but this is practically useless as it steps in 25% increments!?!?! Anything above 50% is too sharp, which makes the halo effect even more pronounced, anything below is blurred (which actually reminds me of pouring lighter fluid onto a newspaper, as the print starts to bleed it blurs the text, the look is very similar!) Basically 50% is the ONLY usable setting.
Adjusting the Brightness / Contrast aliviates the effect somewhat, but it's still noticable. At the moment I have mine set to Brightness 30 / Contrast 45, but I keep changing it!
I have a Pantone i1Display 2 monitor calibrator, but if I follow the setup software to create a new profile exactly, I end up with a profile that means screen text looks over sharpened. So by reducing the Brightness / Contrast to compensate, I lose my calibrated profile, now you see my problem!
Is this issue something that can be fixed with a software / firmware update from Dell? If it can then I might not ask for a refund (for £455 UKP the display quality should be better than this - I also have the red tint issue too, although it's only very slight). What kind of time frame are we looking at for an update if this is the case?
Essentially, if this issue can't be fixed by a software update, and replacing the monitor with another will only mean another one with the same problem (you also run the gamble of a getting a monitor with "acceptable" dead pixel(s), currently the one I have has none) then a refund is the only option. But I also don't want to hold out in the hope that a software update _might_ be able to fix it either (more difficult to return as time goes by).
Can someone from Dell please advise?

I also got a same trouble with the sharpness. To me as a computer programmer, it's significant problem on the text realiability and it's too anonying on my daily work. Actually, I used several Dell and Samsung monitors at company and home and I haven't gotten this problem on those even in the way cheaper one. The default sharpness should be around 40% and the adjustment need to control it with smaller step value. If there is no solution for it, I will probably want to get something else for my eye.
