monitor 19" UltraSharp 1905FP help!

hey,
i just got my dell yesterday and i am having problems with the monitor
the monior pixel right now is 1280 by 1024 when i got it, it was on 1024 by 768 and the quality is terrible. in the monitor i have plugged in the suggested vga and the optional dvi right now. when i go to choose and change my  background and click on a background the quality is poor on it.

can someone help me on what pixels to keep the 19 inch 1905fp on, and what cables to connect it with should i use the suggested vga or the dvi (i have only one monitor)

also i have a graphics car (the nivdia geforce 6800)

please help me

    http://news.designtechnica.com/print_featured_article6.html   Monitor resolution information

17 / 18 / 19 inch LCD's have a native resolution of 1280x1024, and using anything else will give you less than a good viewing experience.  Read up on LCD's from the link above.  Also set the dpi to 96 dpi and have ClearType on in the Display Properties area.  DVI ( Digital should be best though analog has come a long way in improving images, so test both of them to see which one you like.  I like DVI )

    Dim 4400
    2.6 Ghz 400 FSB
    1 Gb 2100 DDR Memory
    20 Gb hard drive 7,200
    Windows XP Home - SP-2
    Leadtek 6600 GT ( AGP ) video
    48xCDRW
    17 LCD ( 1703 FP )
    250 watt power supply

    Display Properties...

Right click an empty space on the desktop / Click on Properties in the next box you see / Click on Appearance in the next box / Click on Effects next / Look at the next box and find the "  Use the following to smooth, etc " which should read Standard, and change it to ClearType / Click OK.
