I have an AD in my environment and the following save sets are configured:
SYSTEM STATE:
SYSTEM DB:
SYSTEM FILES:
The backup process didn't show any problem, when I run the recovery process in another server with the same hardware from AD didn't show any problem too, but when I restart my server the windows didn't up anymore, it freeze in a black window.
I made a new test, I backup my AD with this save sets:
VSS SYSTEM BOOT:
VSS SYSTEM FILESET:
VSS SYSTEM SERVICES:
When I run the recovery process using the VSS save set in the another server with same hardware from AD, the process run without any problem, and the windows up and restore is completed successfully.
Environment:
AD: Windows 2003 SP2 R2 Standard
Virtual hardware (20 Gb disk, 512 Mb, 1 vCPU)
Networker client 7.4.2
New AD: Windows 2003 SP2 R2 Standard
Virtual hardware (20 Gb disk, 512 Mb, 1 vCPU)
Networker client 7.4.2
Networker Server
Windows 2003 SP2 R2 Standard
Networker Server 7.4.2
Backup to disk, before stage to LTO3 library.
Usually MS doesn't support this sort of restores... at least that was the fact before - perhaps they change their POV. Anyway, it might be that something is not picked up correctly as being open or something when not using VSS so you are better if you use it. In theory, it should work well.
1 - Change the name of new server to AD server name; restore SYSTEM STATE and SYSTEM FILES; black window appears and the windows didn't up.
2 - Change the name of new server to AD server name; boot the server using the option "Directory Services Restore Mode"; restore SYSTEM STATE and SYSTEM FILES; black window appears and the windows didn't up.
3 - Change the name of new server to AD server name; run DCPROMO and configure a new AD; boot the server using the option "Directory Services Restore Mode"; restore SYSTEM STATE and SYSTEM FILES; black window appears and the windows didn't up.
Every time the restore process didn't show any error.
Anybody knows if have another recover process to run this type of saveset in Networker?
OK, I know if I use VSS is better but I didn't have license and don't have in this moment to update my networker 7.4.2 to 7.4.3 to obtain free VSS license.
In this moment I must use backup without VSS option.
you should try that with a separate Disk with Windows 2003 and Networker installed, configured for networking access and than it should work. We did that at the recovery of branches. And it worked perfectliy.
Ciao Jens
PS: Windows 2003 recommends VSS and not the normal way to get recovered This was the information we got.

I forgot my question! Sorry!
My question is: When I have windows 2003 I can recovery System State Files without use VSS? Have a specific way to do this restore?
I try all steps from Guides and I always received the same error, the same black window!
