How do I switch the wireless on?

I have a brand new Inspiron 1545 with an Intel WiFi Link 5100 AGN wireless card.  Pressing the wireless button brings up an icon on the desktop - but it quickly fades.  And I remain unconnected.  The diagnostic checks show the card is working fine.  And I can connect with an ethernet cable.   Is it me or is it the laptop?

    With the wireless switch turned on, try...

     

    start, connect to and try connecting to your home network. What happens?
