My parents just got a new Inspiron laptop last night, and I'm trying to help them set up a wireless internet connection. I can get them hooked up to the cable modem and the internet works just fine. It's going wireless that's the problem.
I bought a Netgear router, and I'm just having the hardest time. I have a wireless network at my house, but I set it up on a desktop PC, so my laptop is able to go wireless. My parents only have the laptop. Is there a way this can be done with just the laptop and no desktop? Any help any of you can give me is much appreciated. Thanks in advance!!!

Note that if you are changing the connection to a cable modem between a computer and a router, you need to do a complete reset of the network every time you make the change. To do this, shut everything off. Wait about 5 minutes. Turn on the modem first, and wait another 5 minutes. Then turn on the device that is connected directly to the modem (either the router or the computer), then turn on any other computers that will connect through the router.
One of the problems that I'm experiencing, I think, has to do with my lack of experience setting these things up. The cable modem has the option to connect via USB or via ethernet. When I connected it via ethernet, I couldn't get the modem to connect. When I used the USB port, it did. Is there some kind of setting on the computer that I need to change to enable the ethernet? I noticed when I had it connected that there was a red light on the right of the ethernet cable and a flashing green light to the left of it. Maybe that's the problem?
If you are changing between the USB connection and the the ethernet connection, you still have to do the complete reset of the network as I described in my previous message.
