QUICKLY help me out

ok, well there are wireless routers on sale, which is motivating me to get the wireless network i always wanted, but I'm not clear on stuff. From what i THINK....all I need is the router....and then a wireless card or what have you for whichever PC the router isnt hooked up to (assuming i need nothing but the router for one PC). My brother's laptop has a wireless card, so it would be good to go. But i have an older Windows 98 machine in the basement and was wondering if it could connect to a network thats connected to a XP machine. The network would mainly be for XP to XP, but I'd still want to try and have that 3rd PC on. and if i DO get this wireless router...would it be able to get from the 2nd floor of my house all the way to my basement?
THANKS so much for any help!

THE SALE ENDS ON THE 12th, PLEASE HELP QUICKLY

(...and if i wanted to hook up a PS2...would i do it wirelessly?)

The wireless router would go between the cable or DSL modem and the computers. The W98 and XP computers can coexist on the network (both wired and wireless are on the same network) - you need to study up on XP networking to get the W98/XP machines to see each other. Many posts here on that. As for reaching the basement, it depends on construction of the building and how much metal is in between. Linksys would be a good choice for distance, or the stronger signal Netgear router - you'd need to research to find which model that is. Get wireless cards of the same manufacture as the router you decide on.

if you want the win98 machine to be wireless, make sure it's at least win98 SE or make very sure that any card you buy will support that operating system -- drivers for 98SE are getting hard to find, and anything below that borders on impossible anymore

well, 1st let me say THANKS. anyways.... the router would be a motorola, the wireless card in the laptop is the g standard that game with the gateway. as for the 98 machine i was thinkin of getting a USB wireless card for it. think everything would work out? does motorola have a good reputation with routers, I know their other products are supposed to be of good quality.
     well, thanks again!

"Users are free to roam almost anywhere up to 328 feet inside the home and up to 1312 feet outside" - Either optimistic or indicates a better antenna or higher power.  Remember, those speeds are ideal and for traffic on the LAN.  For internet speeds, the fastest ideally is the connection speed of your modem.

that one specifically. i was also wondering about the speeds...the PC thats connected with a wire, strait to the router should have its regular speed, about 100Mbps, and the wirless ones should have about half that speed, right (about 54Mbps)? just wanna be sure that main PC shouldnt see much slowdown.
    well, thanks AGAIN

    yet another developement: WIRED network

the people who lived in my house before me had a network, wired one. there is a jack in my room(2nd floor) and 1st floor and they all run into the basment...

in the basement theres the blue wire...it goes into a grey-tan box (about 3 inches x 3inches), that has 2 enthernet jacks on the other side. now i figure this is to go to the router, but why 2 jacks. AND i have the modem in my room (2nd floor) so i cant figure out how it would go from the modem in my room (2nd floor) to the space for the router (basement) and still have a cable come back to my room since theres only one jack in my room. I know it all seems very confusing, but i dont get this... help.

    |2nd floor has: main PC, cable modem, ethernet jack|

    |1st floor has: only a jack| (irrelevent anyways)

    |basement has: ethernet chord running into a small box, which then has two jacks on the opposing side|

i dont get how it would go from the modem, to the jack, to what would be the router, back up, and into the comp. unless i had to like move the modem down there (which would 'stink').
