true mobile 2300 & laptop set up
Hi, I am setting up a wireless network for a friend tomorrow. She has a cable modem, and a laptop. Can I do this without having a desktop connected to the router? In other words, is a desktop required? I've never done this without a desktop connected to the router.

Yes the laptop has an ethernet port. I will give it a shot. Thank you so much for your input! Also, the default username & pwd are "admin" correct? And the SSID is 3333333? I have not seen the manual yet but I think this is what I read some time ago.

Yep, it's admin/admin. According to the manual, the default SSID is "wireless". You'll definitely want to change that and the password, and put in a MAC address restriction list in. I'd test things at that point before adding any additional security settings...and then add either 128-bit WEP or WPA!
It wouldn't hurt to check that the router firmware and wireless card drivers are current.

Does the laptop have an Ethernet adapter? It's tough to troubleshoot a wireless problem unless you can connect to the router via Ethernet. Most laptops include integrated Ethernet, so using a laptop to set up the router should work fine.
Note that the best way to set up a 2300 is via its Web-based configuration tool. No software needs to be installed on the laptop to set up the router - it can all be done via a Web browser.
