Wireless connection

I have my wireless router connected to the downstairs computer via ethernet cable.

Is it possible to connect the router to the telephone line in the hall and use a wireless adaptor to connect the downstairs comp to the internet ?

Also if this is possible would it make the internet connection any faster as

So long as your comcast cable modem can connect by ethernet, all you will need is a cable/dsl router.   If you want the laptop to connect by wireless, you will need a wireless router.   Note that wireless routers also allow up to 4 computers to connect by ethernet.
