    Timbalero777,

Your 1100 is a low end laptop that does not have any internal wireless capability, nor can an internal wireless network adapter be added.  You only option is a PCMCIA wireless network adapter or a USB wireless network adapter (which is not especially portable).

I have an Inspiron 1100 -- the owners manual says I should have a TrueMobil device inside.

    Is this not correct?

    frontiercoop,

The Inspiron 1100 does not have mini-pci capability, which is where an internal wireless network adapter would be installed.  The newer Inspiron 1150 does have this capability.  If you follow the links to the mini-pci card in the Inspiron 1100, 5100 and 5150 Service Manual it clearly indicates that only the I5100 and I5150 have the capability.  Any Truemobile card in the 1100 has to be a PC card connected in the PC card slot in the side of the computer.
