PowerEdge 2600 Extended Service

Our PE2600 has worked like a champ for 4.5 years, but I see that our 4-hour service contract is expiring this coming March...and Dell has no service contracts offered past 5 years.

What's the experience with the PE2600?  Will it continue to run well?  Are there other 4-hour response policies available in my area (Indy)?

Our PE2600 is used basically as a file server for about 25 users.  Runs no application programs other than Veritas (running W2000 Server).

Should we just plan to replace the server after 5 years as a matter of course?

Another influencing factor:

It turns out, we'll need more HD space fairly soon.  Have all six SCSI bays filled (RAID'd) yielding about 300G.  If we got a new server, should we go with internal SCSI array, or the external enclosure?  Same question if we keep the current server.

Thx....

I would look at it like this; if the system goes down, how much is the 4 hour warranty (or any warranty) worth to you? If you can live with several days of downtime while you order parts from spare parts or online vendors, then I'd stick with the 2600, but obviously as time progresses, the chance of failure due to it's age will increase.

If you cannot afford that type of downtime though, I'd suggest looking at a new 2900 or so. Per the tech specs it supports up to 8 or 10 drives (up to 8 SATA or up to 10 SAS). With current drive sizes, you could buy a mirror of 73's for the OS and then a 3-drive raid 5 of 300GB drives for data storage and still have room to grow in the chassis. You'd also obviously be able to get the 4 hour warranty to limit downtime.
