And make the system work in a distribution of type D128a but using just one module per CPU:
CPU
Slot
Capacity
Ranks
Frequency
0
DIMM1
32 GB
2Rx4
2666 MHz
0
DIMM3
0
DIMM2
0
DIMM4
1
DIMM1
32 GB
2Rx4
2666 MHz
1
DIMM3
1
DIMM2
1
DIMM4
I'm asking this because of the red cells on the official document (see image attached some lines above: for the D128a there are 2 modules in red textcolor)
Extra mile:
It is desired to have at least 64 GB, but re-using the 4GB modules would be a nice-to-have, so I would like to validate whether a distribution like the following is possible or not:
CPU
Slot
Capacity
Ranks
Frequency
0
DIMM1
32 GB
2Rx4
2133 MHz
0
DIMM3
4 GB
1Rx8
2133 MHz
0
DIMM2
4 GB
1Rx8
2133 MHz
0
DIMM4
1
DIMM1
32 GB
2Rx4
2133 MHz
1
DIMM3
4 GB
1Rx8
2133 MHz
1
DIMM2
4 GB
1Rx8
2133 MHz
1
DIMM4
Note: Given the official manual specifies that modules will work at the least frequency installed, the 2666 MHz modules will work at 2133 MHz.
My intuition tells me that double-sized 2-rank modules may be mixed with 1-rank modules. I.e. the with the same rank size. Or may be not. Intel offers a great flexibility in RAM configurations and size mixing (with degraded performance), but DELL's bios may not be ready tho that. On SuperMicro, for instance, you can mix any ram with almost any ram, but all the advanced features will go off.

From my own experience, I cannot mix and $rx4 with any $rx8 memory sticks.
1rx8 and 2rx8 sticks seem to fine together.
i managed to find some memory 4drx4 on ebay and i just stuck with it. i wasn't concerned about speed.
