After the service call, has the system temp remained lower?

Even though I checked and precision 3551 laptop was set to Balanced power plan, I ran the command line:

powercfg /setactive 8c5e7fda-e8bf-4a96-9a85-a6e23a8c635c

This set it to High Performance plan. Then I used the UI to put it back on Balanced power plan and I noticed that it finally ran at the normal CPU speed and not constantly at Turbo speed. This also caused the Nvidia GPU to cool down considerably. It seems like maybe the power plan settings got messed up and still thought they were in Balanced but were actually in High Performance. Putting it on High performance (which was hidden) using the command line, and then putting it back on Balanced seems to have fixed this issue.

It eventually reverted back and was running consistently at over 4GHz and Nvidia GPU was overheating. What seems to be holding now is disabling Turbo Boost mode using the following commands to disable it on battery and plugged in:

as admin on affected laptop

(Plugged In  - AC)

Powercfg -setacvalueindex scheme_current sub_processor PERFBOOSTMODE 0

(Battery - DC)

Powercfg -setdcvalueindex scheme_current sub_processor PERFBOOSTMODE 0

I have the same problem with my Precision 3561. It overheats only when I have it plugged into charger or docking station.

I have to unplug it when it starts getting too hot or it switches itself off

I have same heating issue with employer provided Precision 3561. It just shuts off due to overheating when on plain desk.

Really wonder how Dell is getting away by selling such substandard hardware to all these IT companies.

This is when using Revit, or running building calculations. 

Machines are running on desks - So ventilation is fine. 

How come Dell aren't addressing this? 

I have to install / run Throttlestop to allow machines to do their jobs.

are you running this with nvidia discrete gou?

if so, which one?

mine is 7560 , using NVIDIA RTX A4000, very very hot on the surface, even I turn off 4/8 CPU cores, and tune down the tdp to 10W on CPU side,  it seems the GPU is the problem, i down-tuned the cpu core and memory clock to minimum using MSI burner, still tooooo hot,  not usable, will ask IT to return or change to different one

just as a "last try" possible suggestion:

I read from another Precision user experiencing this problem, and for him/her it turned out the Nvidia driver was the culprit all along.

WindowsUpdate continually pushes the Latest Nvidia driver available, overwriting the Dell-sanctioned (likely older) driver.

You might just try to download the Dell "officially supported" nVidia driver from Dell Support page using your systems TAG.  

Set Windows update to "pause" for a few weeks, before installing the older Dell driver, ofc.  Then see how it runs.

Ill try to find the OP, but ive been scouring the web everywhere so not certain ill be able to find it.  For that user, though, apparently the heat problem immediately stopped from then on....

I am really worried about the overheating of Dell Precision 3551 laptop PC. Just working with simple Microsoft office and some multimedia usage but the processor is heating up like burning the laptop and diagnostics gives me even temperature up-to 98 degree centigrade,  Really surprised and tired off this issue. The laptop is under warranty and despite getting support from dell after sales service, they have replaced the internal overheating related parts but the problem still persists. They further say that we cant do anything more you may call customer support service but the engineer from dell support centre were also surprised and saying that this may be a design fault. Really annoying that paying the huge amount for Dell i7- 10th Gen its not even capable to perform the simple tasks and gets overheated and sometimes even shut off and hangs.... Don't know what can be the way forward Dell thermal power manager has been installed and set to cool, optimized etc. no solution. 

Kindly someone guide me what can be the solution...
