Dell Media Experience Remote Receiver not being recognized.

Hello:
I have the same problem as is listed in this post:
My new Dimension 8400 will not recognize the remote receiver when I plug it into the USB ports.  I have the latest system BIOS and Intel Chipset drivers from the Dell Support Website for the 8400.

I tried contacting Cyberlink support (manuf partners with Dell for the Remote Control) with this problem and received this response:

"Thanks for your e-mail.

We consider this should be USB port issue, Please kindly contact your mother board vendor (Dell) directly about it then they can provide further assistance to you.

Sorry for all the inconvenience you've been caused. "

Hello, please also refer to previous
question #CS000214649.

When I plug in the USB receiver unit
for my Dell Media Experience Remote
into a USB port on my computer, the
remote does not install properly.
When I go to device manager, it shows
up as "USB Composite Device" with a
yellow exclamation mark and error
message.

Sometimes the receiver will properly
initialize and be recognized as HID
compliant Mouse and Keyboard, but not
usually, and typically will NOT work
when the computer is rebooted. When
the receiver is recognized properly,
the remote unit appears to work
properly. Unfortunately it usually
does not get recognized by the
computer, and the remote will not
function.

What can be done to solve this
problem? Are there drivers or other
software or other settings which will
allow my remote receiver to be
recognized and properly initialized
whenever it is plugged in or the
computer is rebooted?
"

Does anyone have any insight into this problem?

    SteveDay,

You tried all six USB ports?

Yes, I did.  The recognition of the receiver is very flaky.  Sometimes it will be recognized, sometimes it won't.

    Another interesting issue:

I tried plugging in a self-powered USB 2.0 hub which I had lying around.  When I use the hub with the powersupply plugged into it, my Dimension completely hangs on bootup.  If I use the hub without the powersupply (the hub is supposed to be autoswitching w.r.t. to power) the computer boots fine, and the IR receiver appears to have a much better chance of being properly initialized.

I'm thinking *maybe* the receiver requires more power through the USB port and perhaps the motherboard USB ports can't regulate it properly, although, this is counterintuitive to the issue with the powered hub.  (I would think that if the receiver requires more power, then the hub would need to be plugged in for it to work properly, as it is now, both the hub and the receiver receive power from the same USB port)

I've stopped using the remote, mainly because I couldn't get it to support anything but the DMX program.

Before I stopped using it, I applied a BIOS update to my Dimension 8400 which came out about a week after I posted this message.  It seemed to help the recognition issue, but by that time I had pretty much given up on the product.

    Update:
I've done some more experiementing with this remote receiver, and have found the only solution for my problem:
If I plug the receiver into an external USB hub, it is properly recognized.  I don't know why it doesn't work when directly plugged into the computer (any USB port), but when using a hub, it works fine.
USB hubs can be found very cheaply at many retailers, you may consider trying it, or borrowing one from a friend and seeing if it work.  "Borrow" one from a store if you need to.  :smileytongue:

    SteveDay,

So A04 fixed the issue with the self-powered USB 2.0 hub hanging the system, and the hub fixed the remote issue?
