I recently purchased a Dell inspiron 6400 notebook about 3 weeks ago (actually i bought it over a month ago but it was a christmas present so i didn't start using it till christmas). And earlier this week, i got a disk read error. I ran the diagnostic tools and i got an error code 0142. The weird part it, it will boot if i leave it running for a while, almost like it needs to warm up first. The longer it has been running, the faster it will load up. After its been running for a while, i can turn it off for an hour or so and it will load fine. But after i leave it off for an extended period of time, i get the disk read error. I assume the hard drive is failing? But its only been in use 3 weeks, its kind of disappointing it would fail so soon. Will the hard drive eventually not boot up at all? Or what is the problem. I would assume if the hard drive is defective, it wouldn't load at all. Any ideas what is wrong?
Power on, F12, Dell diagnostics, extended test, hard drive. It sounds like the drive is faulty. If the test fails, record the exact error message and call for a replacement drive.
Ok I will try that but does it tell me how to remove it in the owners manuel online here? cause I don't have any of the manuels or disk that came with the system.
Also would you have any idea what a new hard drive would cost and where to get one, cause again I don't think it list any parts for this system with dell because of the age of the laptop.
Hi, i'm new....i got a problem similar meteora's one... i was usin mi inspiron 6400 and it shutted down..i tryed to restart it but before it said "Can't read from hard drive, press ctrl+alt+can to restart"...then after 3 or 4 times it stopped to boot... if i press f12 and dell diagnostic i have this error:
START DST SHORT TEST
NO HARD DRIVE DETECTED
ERROR N°: 1000-0141
someone know if i can resolve it or if i have to change hard disk???
If you have onsite service, they'll come within the timeframe of your warranty. If you don't, they'll send you a replacement drive. If you do not have the XP CD, make sure you order one, or that you ask for a pre-imaged drive.
Physically changing a drive is a 5-minute operation. Reloading WIndows takes hours.
sry if i do a stupid question, but how can i reseat it? u mean format it?
and another thing, if i call assistance,do how long does it take to come anda replace my hard drive? + o - not exactly lol
