Unable to charge Dell XPS using Apple USB-C charger

Question

In a typical Dell fashion, I can't comment for whatever reason on existing thread here. The published answer is wrong, I can't charge my Dell XPS 9550 using Apple-supplied USB-C charger.

@masiton Also, what specified 'Apple-supplied USB-C charger' are you using? Apple has made a variety of USB-C chargers with a range of maximum wattage output support and a variety of supported voltage output levels.

jphughan · Answer

@masiton Many Dell systems, including older XPS 15 models, limit themselves to 65W when using third-party USB-C power sources, even if the source can provide more. Since the XPS 15 9550 is designed for a 130W power source, you're providing less than half the power the system is designed to have available, which will very likely result in slow or no charging and significantly throttled performance. Unfortunately the only way to run 130W over USB-C/TB3 into a 9550 is from a Dell dock that supports that. Dell later made a 130W USB-C charger, but it doesn't work at 130W with systems that predate it, like the 9550. So I really wouldn't recommend relying on another power source except maybe as an emergency charger or a charger that you'd only plan to use for overnight charging while the system is off.
