Problems playing DVDs

When I try to play a DVD, both the audio and video are choppy, too choppy to hear or see the movie.  I probably got a virus which has caused other problems with my laptop.  I have been advised to download the driver from the dell website, but I can't figure out which one to choose.  My device manager says I have a Toshiba MK4018GAS, but I have popped out the DVD drive and it indicates that it is a:  H L Data Storage, Hitachi-LG-data storage, model GCC-424ON.
 
Which driver do I choose?  Any suggestions?

    The driver is part of Windows.  All drives use the same one.  You may
    mean Firmware.  Before you try that, check the drive is in DMA mode and
    not PIO mode here .............

    Did Skybird’s reply help or resolve your problem?  Please post your results as I am having a similar problem and will be trying this same suggestion with my DVD drive. 

    It is always nice to see that the forum is helping resolve problems users have.

    I followed the link that Skybird provided and found on this page reference to a utility Dell offers that corrects the PIO to UDMA.  I ran this utility rebooted and now my DVD plays back with the slow motion/choppy effect.

    One thing to keep in mind is the Dell utility runs so quickly you may wonder if it did anything at all.  To be honest Dell should have created a Message Box to notify the user that the operation was complete and instruct the user to reboot their PC, but that is only my opinion.

    After you reboot you will need to check to see if your IDE is now running in DMA vs. PIO, and if you are not sure how to do this there are instructions that can be found on the same link Skybird provided.

    In closing, what I did first was checked the IDE speed to confirm it was in fact running PIO, then I ran the utility, then after that rebooted and confirmed it was DMA.  I used this approach as if the IDE was already running in DMA then I knew this was more then likely not going to fix my problem
