STOP: 0x0000007B ERROR RECEIVED ON BOOT UP

Hope someone can please help....

I opened IE a few evenings ago and recieved the following blue-screen error msg:

"*** STOP: 0x0000007B (0x813FFA30,0xC0000032,0x00000000,0x00000000)

INACCESSIBLE_BOOT_DEVICE

If this is the first time you've seen this Stop error screen, restart your computer. If this screen appears again, follow these steps:

Check for viruses on your computer. Remove any newly installed hard drives or hard drive controllers. Check your hard drive to make sure it is properly configured and terminated. Run CHKDSK /F to check for hard drive corruption, and then restart your computer.

Refer to your Getting Started manual for more information on troubleshooting Stop errors."

I tried restarting my system and I keep receiving blue-screen when the the Windows 2000 splash screen is up. I've tried booting from the boot disk, that did not work. When I attempt this and run the repair and run chkdsk /r, I receive a message stating that the autochk.exe cannot be found. I've run a data recovery software trial and I can view all the files on the harddrive through this software, but if I can recover the files or get the operating system to come back up I'd rather do that (instead of spending $200 to get the files back).

Any ideas? Any help is greatly appreciated!

Thanks, kltx1010

I work in the IT department for a company with a fairly large sales staff, each member of which has a company owned Dell Latitude.

I have encountered many hard drive problems with either the error messages:
"unmountable_boot_volume", or something similar, including the error you have recieved.

As to solutions, Dell will tell you to reinstall windows.  You don't nesecarily have to do that.

You can try removing the hard drive, booting the laptop without any hard drive, then power off, reinstall hard drive, and boot again.  In some cases this has let me back into windows.

Once in windows, you need to go to 'run' and type chkdsk /f.  It may say you have to reboot, if it does, go ahead and reboot.  That should fix the problem.

However, if that doesn't work, then you are in the same boat I am in at the moment, trying to boot a failed hard drive.  I've just about run out of ideas.  If I find anything else, I'll do my best to let you know.

    Best of luck to you.

I work in an IT department also - I encountered similar problems with 2 latitudes.

I got one back, but not the other, so its worth a try.

If you have a W2K installation CD, reboot from this and choose R for repair in the Setup screen. Then choose C for recovery console. I did a directory list at the C prompt and got the error "An error occurred during directory enumeration". Type chkdsk here. It fixed one of the PCs and not the other. Like I said - worth a try.
