Stopping certain start up programs

I would like to stop Quicktime, Dell Support, Dell Support Alerts
and some icon called safely remove hardware from starting up when I boot my computer.
I would also like to stop running processes ctfmon, msmsgs and Dsagnt from
running at startup also. When I uncheck the process box they keep loading
and are listed twice, one checked one unchecked. Any help is great.
Thanks.

By chance did you click on start / run / enter MSCONFIG into the box, than click OK.  After which you click on Start Up in the upper right hand side, and uncheck those programs from starting up, than click on OK at the bottom, than restart.  When the system restarts itself, a gray box will appear in the center of your screen.  Click on the left check off box ( Don't show me this again message ) botton acknowledging that you have changed the settings.  If you don't, this message will continual to appear each time you boot back up.  If so, and it still the programs appear, than I hope someone else can assist you.

Thanks SR45, but yes I have done that. What I don't know is what

programs listed in startup are Quicktime, Dell support or Dell support alerts.

The only program that actually identified itself was Real Player.

    The startup name was RealPlay.

    Dimension 8300 running XP.

    512 Ram Running very SLOooowww.

Where do you find out what memory speed you have as in 2100?

    Thanks.

http://support.dell.com/support/edocs/systems/dim2100/specs.htm#memory  Click on this link to your system and scroll down to Memory.  It should give you some details there.

If you don't know what a program is, that is listed in the Start up file, than copy that mess of letters that you see into a Google Search.  Just list what you see in the address box for google.com and it will tell you what it is, and you will know if you should remove it from start up.  Really only thing that you need in the start up is the firewall / anti virus software...Everything else can be started up by clicking on the program itself later if you need it.

Normally, when I get a system, I make sure I reformat and reinstall windows to get rid of all the Dell junk, such as Quicktime, which I never use.  Someday, you may wish to uninstall some or most of Dells software that you do not use threw Add/Remove or do a system reinstallation.  Hard work, yes, but the systems seems to run faster.

Others may assist you further...Good luck
