Can I use a RAID-5 BCV as a snap source while in a split state?
I have a DMX4-24 with Microcode 5773 and SymCli 7.1.2
I have some Standard Raid-5 devices which are locally protected with Raid-5 BCVs. If I split Standard and BCV, then can I use the BCV as a Source for creating Snaps?
If yes, then do I need to set Clone Emulation Mode?

yes, you can use R5 BCV as snap source as long as BCV has been split. You will need to terminate snap session before you can re-establish BCV.

Thanks for taking the pain mate!!!!
If I understand the PRIMUS correctly, We can use the BCV as SNAP Source but Standard-BCV relation needs to be destroyed.
Does that mean that If I create a snap with BCV, then after Snap termination, I will have to do a Full establish between Standard device and BCV?

I was searching Powerlink and found this......... After reading this I am confused... This Primus mentions VSNAP and SNAP. I am not sure what is a VSnap. I need to use Snap only.
Kindly enlighten me

Change: Established and split a BCV with environment variable SYMCLI_CLONE_EMULATION=ENABLED Root Cause: When using RAID-5 BCVs or the SYMCLI_CLONE_EMULATION environment variable, TimeFinder automatically maps a TimeFinder/Mirror command to the executable of the appropriate TimeFinder/Clone command. On the Symmetrix, clone is used to copy the data from the standard to the BCV. When this happens, the Symmetrix considers the BCV to be a clone session target device. As such, restrictions then apply to the use of the BCV as a clone or snap source device. Fix: When a RAID-5 BCV or BCV in emulation mode is in a split state, it cannot be used as a clone source or snap source. This does not apply to vSNAP. Starting with SYMCLI version 6.4.2, When the BCV is split and background copy complete, the BCV can be the source of an vSNAP operation. However, the BCV cannot be SNAP TGT and TF/Clone TGT at the same time.
To use the BCV as a clone or snap source, the TimeFinder relationship must be cancelled using the 'symmir cancel' command. This requires a full establish between the standard and the BCV once the clone or snap session is terminated. In a mainframe environment this would be the DELINC to remove the relationship.
Notes: Similarly, BCVs in this state may also not be used as a clone target from another device. This suggests that BCV can't be a source to SNAP. Has this changed in new Microcode or it is still the same? Can anyone practically try it or has seen Snaps made from BCV?

DMX3 eng 73 ? I’m not sure, but that’s kind of old nowadays, isn’t it ?

Hey Mr. Hitachi ...you have been out of EMC play-ground for a while i can tell, code 73 is the latest code for DMX3/4, go build a LUSE or something.

works fine ..i synced R5-BCV and when state was Synchronized i tried to "symsnap create" and got error message "(The BCV device cannot be manipulated because it is BCV attached to a STD device)" . Now i split R5-BCV from STD and try again ..success. I am on DMX3, code 73, SE 7.2.0
