XPS 10 with Windows 8.1 Preview

Downloaded the 8.1 Preview a couple of hours ago after getting an e-mail with a link from Microsoft.  The link installed something and requested a reboot.  I was then presented with the option to install the 8.1 preview.  After a 2GB+ download, I again was prompted to reboot which I did.  Since then (for over 65 minutes) all that is on the screen is the white Dell logo on a black screen.

This cannot be normal.  Any ideas on what to do next?

Thanks in advance for any suggestions!

Rich

I'm having the same problem. My tablet is stuck at the Dell logo screen for hours. Very disappointed. I'm trying to find an option on the Dell site to reinstall Windows 8 RT.

Same issue here.  Stuck on the Dell logo after being asked to reboot during the Windows RT 8.1 Preview install.

It appears that Microsoft have now blocked the installation of the Windows RT 8.1 Preview on Dell XPS 10.  When I attempted to install this morning, I received the error: "The Update is not applicable to your computer".

I'm glad they've done *something* (and that I didn't have a chance to try the update yesterday!) but there's no information 'out there' as yet - searching for "Dell XPS 10 Windows RT 8.1" yields only this thread.

Bummer!! Thanks for the information. Unfortunately I guess that what I get for being an early adopter. After spending 2 hours on the phone with Dell tech support trying to do the most difficult task of holding the "up volume button, windows button and power button" at the same time to trigger a reboot/reinstall of the system. My tablet was completely bricked. The technician walked me through the several process and ultimately after going through the Windows Refresh and then twice going through Windows RT re-install; the tablet would ultimately stop and freeze at the black screen with the Dell logo.

Ultimately Dell is sending out a Fed Ex box for me to send my tablet for them to fix it free. However I'll have to wait 2 days to receive the Fed Ex box from Dell and then they will keep the tablet for 5 to 10 days. So I'll be without my tablet for a most 3 weeks.

I'm a little disappointed because I would have assumed that the more common Windows 8 devices would have been tested by Microsoft and Dell to ensure that the Consumer Preview would work or at least if not then a prompt to let the user know that the Preview will not work for your machine. Rather than this message getting out to Dell customers some 8 hours after the Preview has been made available.

Oddly I chose to install the Consumer Preview on my tablet because I didn't mind losing my existing apps and having to reinstall them. I wisely chose not to install the Consumer Preview on my laptop because I use that for work and last year when I install the Consumer Preview for Windows 8 on my laptop. I had to go through hopes to get Cisco systems VPN software to work.

You live and learn. I guess I'll think twice before trying out Consumer Previews in the future.

One interesting thing about this is that an XPS 10 was apparently used at Build to showcase the extended battery life that RT 8.1 gets vs RT.

So where the issue lies is anybody's guess.  I'm hoping they put out an updated version that WORKS with the XPS 10 though, as I really want to try this (and don't want to put it on my laptop because of the issue where you're going to have to reinstall everything to go from the Preview to RTM version).

What's also interesting is the silence from MS and Dell on this issue.  I haven't seen any public announcements, and this forum post is still the most useful search result!

Well even if MS put an updated version that works on the XPS 10; I'm a little hesitant to install and will probably just wait until the official release later this year. I'm already not looking forward to being without my tablet for probably 2 to 3 weeks while Dell fix it. I don't want to use my wife's iPad.. My daughters Nook tablets are slow and laggy even though it runs full Android 4.0. So I guess I'll have to use my laptop and my Logitech Touchpad to get my Windows 8 fix. But I will NOT be installing Windows 8.1 preview on my laptop for the reason as you noted having to re-install all of my important apps. I'll wait until later in the year where the upgrade to Windows 8.1 will keep all of my existing apps.

    Update from my failure.

After the initial try and getting the frozen boot logo, I chose to do a complete recovery re-install (doing so from a USB recovery drive that I had created when I first got the device).  The recovery seemed to work until I rebooted for the first time.  The frozen boot logo issue returned immediately.

I've tried calling Dell support, but since I purchased the device from an authorized reseller they can't immediately help me until they complete some mysterious paperwork.

I subsequently did another complete recovery re-install from whatever was on the device at that point.  Again, the recovery seemed to work until I rebooted for the first time.  The frozen boot logo issue returned immediately again.

Just wanted to add my +1.  I too installed it early yesterday and now my XPS 10 is stuck at the Dell logo on boot.  I've tried the various recovery options all of which have been unsuccessful.  I keep hoping that someone will figure out some way around this - but I guess I'll have to make the call to have it RMA'd.
