Is it best practice to use a hostname/cname for an export path? This is with regards to supporting DR activities. I've read the best practice guides but there's no mention of the export.

in general yes
of course if your DR environment doesnt have dependable name resolution then this could become a problem.
But then these days if DNS isnt work then other services also are impaired
