A question about installing drivers
Hi,
I have a Dell Dimension 8400 XPHomesp2 and have some questions about installing drivers with the Resource CD. I know I have to install the Resource CD and then use it to install drivers in this order:
Chipset
Video Card drivers
Sound Card Drivers
Network Card
Modem Card
My questions are: After installing the chipset and video card drivers from the Resource CD, I guess I'm suppose to remove that, use the Sound Blaster Live CD to install the Sound Card (reboot, I think) and then go back to the Resource CD and install the network card and modem card. Is that correct? Is a reboot required after each item, or only if the computer tells you to reboot? And is there any reason to install the modem driver if I don't use the modem or fax?
Edit: I just thought of another question, when I'm installing Windows and would pick (for Network) "typical", when I get to the GUI for Network can I just select "no" and "skip" since I have dsl connecting two computers with a switch and I don't want XP handling that. (I think I did this is the past, but just want to be sure about this.)

After installing the chipset drivers the order of the rest of the drivers is not important. I am always cautious when I install anything on my computers. If something goes wrong, I want to know what it is. Thus, after installing one driver I reboot and check to make sure everything is still working properly. If it's not, I know that the last thing I did is what is causing the problem. If you take the approach of installing everything before rebooting, and then there is a problem, you may not know which driver is causing the problem. One never knows when you might need a modem. If the computer has a modem, I would be safe and install the drivers for it. I doubt that it would cause problems if you didn't install the drivers, but it's up to you.

Bascially the chipset driver ALWAYS preceeds other device drivers in an installation sequence. Once that device driver is installed you can install the modem, network and usb 2.0 drivers (if applicable). The video driver should preceed the sound card driver, though you should update Direct X prior to the installation of the vid drivers. That eliminates any issues of vid card drivers not installing correctly, when many vid cards today using the newer operating systems prefer DX 9.0c with certain video card adapters. Once completed on the vid drivers you can install the sound card drivers and continue until your hardware and peripherals are loaded!The main reason the chipset driver comes first in sequence, is the processing of other inf device drivers properly, which come from the chipset on the motherboard in the instruction set.Message Edited by Pterminiator on 11-25-2005 01:29 PM

I appreciate everyone's advice very much. I guess it wouldn't hurt to install the modem driver. I'm pretty sure that XP sp2 comes with Direct X9.0c.
How do I know if I need to install usb drivers? (I do have usb ports that the printer and camera can attach to.)
After I install the sound drivers and everything else, I would connect the speakers. Would I get a "Windows has detected new hardware" and could I just cancel that since I already installed the drivers?

Windows will detect the sound card. It will not detect anything connected to it (speakers, line in feed, etc.) so you won't get a "detected new hardware" notification when you connect the speakers.
