can't boot a bootable XPcdrom on a dimension 4100
Hi!
I try to install on a Dell Dimension 4100 Windows XP, because the original Win98 keeps crashing more and more frequently. However, the XP bootcd will not boot. I does boot on another machine, so the disk is ok. the Cdromdrive is set as the first bootdevice in the Dell BIOS. And the dell productrecovery CDROM for Win98 boots.
BUT not my non dell WinXP. instead win98 from the HD boots. This is totally weird. Anyone any suggestions?

When the "Press any key to boot from CD" appears you must press a key promptly or the system will default to the hard drive as the boot device. Are you possibly missing that brief window of opportunity?

i think you can make a start up disc from the cd so why not do that? sometimes these things happen with cd drives. they just don't want to recognize a particular disk. or maybe you can try another cd drive on your computer and see if that works.

is there any option in the BIOS to switch this kind of messages on?
but why does the win98 dell recovery CD boot without hitting a button and my XP-CD not?
