cant start windows..

posted in the wrong forum at first. Ive run the diagnostic and there were no errors.

Hi

I got a old Dell computer (XPS/Dimension 400/9150) planning on buying a new one pretty soon.. but i wanna save all things i got on this one first.

So this happened today. When starting up i get this message "Windows could not start because the following fileis missing or corrupt: \WINDOWS\SYSTEM\CONFIG\SYSTEM" and asks me to insert windows setup cd-rom and press "r" when the disc loads. So i go to the boot menu using F12 and start from the windows cd. I select repair when the cd is finished loading and in the dos window that shows next i type 1 and hit enter, then a blue screen shows up saying "problem detected etc.. Bad_Pool_Caller try reboot and press F8 to go to advanced startup and choose safe mode" so i do that, but when choosing safe mode the first error message shows up

again " file is corrupt or missing etc.." also tried to choose the option start from the last good configuration. Technical information Stop: 0x000000C2

ty for any answer

It sounds like Windows XP is corrupt to the point "Repair" will not run.  If you are going to buy a new PC, you can install the hard drive in a USB enclosure or maybe connect it as a second drive temporarily in the new computer and copy your user data to the new PC (you can't copy programs as they must be installed).

It sounds like, at a minimum, your user data has either never been backed up to some external device (CD/DVD's, flash drive, external hard drive) or you have never backed it up.  Backups are for WHEN they are needed (this is a prime example) rather than IF it's ever needed.

    thanks for the reply..

I tried to install xp today and ive got the same message.. blue window with bad_pool etc. So whenever i try to repair or install that message

shows up. When i try to start windows either in safe or normal mode it says try repair.. . Isnt there anyway to force it to start in safe mode ?

or can i reformat the harddrive some way that doesnt include the above issues?..

Im gonna go with your advise otherwise.. try to use it as an external or secondary drive when i buy a new one.
