- I have Windows XP Home running on Dell Inspiron 630M laptop, which has been running fine albeit slow.
- Turned it on yesterday morning and this appeared on screen, "Windows could not start because the following is missing or corrupt: \system32\hal.dll. Please re-install a copy of the above file."
- I have the Dell Reinstallation CD but have been hesitant to use it for fear of causing more issues.
- I have read on other posts where folks can't get past the "error" screen to get to the menu where the computer can be started via the CD. This worked for me by repeatedly hitting my F12 key asI turn the computer on. The F11 key may also work.
- Does anyone know what will happen when I try to use the CD Boot Device and run the reinstallation? What caused the hal.dll file to disappear or get corrupted in the first place?
I've gone through the Windows Setup using the disk, but when I get to the multiple choice page there doesn't seem to be a way of choosing the "repair" option. When I press Enter the XP starts to download? Is this OK?
I've now reached the Microsoft Windows XP(TM) Recovery Console and have selected 1: C:\WINDOWS as the valid installation number. Now I'm being asked to Type the Administrator password: ! I have no idea what this is or where to find it!!

2eaggereagles,
Thank you for using the Dell Community Forum.
You can boot to the Windows disc and choose the Repair Windows option.
