The icon "desktop explorer" with a picture of a lock mysteriously appeared on my desktop on boot up this morning. I cannot execute, move, or delete it. I have searched the internet to find out what it is but found nothing. Can you tell me what is means and how I can delete it?
Right click on the icon and select Properties from the drop down list. Click on the various tabs and see if you can learn more about what this program is, where it is installed, when it was installed, etc. Report back what you find.
Volcano, thank you for responding. A right click produces nothing except "create shortcut". Holding the mouse over the icon gives the message "displays and manages your virtual desktops". It does not execute and I cannot move or delete.

Go to Start > Control Panel > Add & Remove Programs and look through the list and see if there is anything listed there that could be this program. Look for things that have the word "Desktop" in their name.
Hi again volcano. Add/remove programs lists only one program with desktop in the title, Logitech Desktop Messenger. There are two more Logitech programs, Logitech ITouch Software and Logitech Resource Center. I also notice a Logitech icon on my taskbar at the bottom of the page that I do not remember being there. I did add/remove Microsoft Office yesterday. My son-in law also shut off Windows Messenger but I don't know where.
Hello again. I am still struggling to figure out why an icon mysteriously appeared on my desktop that I cannot execute, move or delete. It is labeled desktop explorer. I can find nothing when doing a google search. The only thing in add/remove software with desktop in the title is Logitech desktop messenger. Also strangely an icon has appeared in my task bar logitech itouch software. It does not give an install date in add/remove just the size of the program that is just a little over 2.5 G.
Please all help will be appreciated. I would insert a print screen of it as it appears on my desktop but I don't think this forum is setup to do that.
Part of the problem for me is that I can't see exactly what it is that you have. Perhaps you should look at the following results of google searches and see if anything looks familiar:
Things that can installed without your permission are often due to viruses and spyware. Are you running antivirus software with up to date virus definitions? Have you scanned for and removed all spyware from your system?
volcano, can I post a picture of my desktop icons here? It will show you the icon I am worried about. I have Norton anti-virus 2005 installed with auto update on. I run Ad-Aware regularly. Yesterday I purchased and installed Norton Firewall Security.
Yesterday, Norton Anti-Virus identified a threat Adware.lop that I could not delete. So I followed Norton's instructions, entered safe mode, ran an anti virus scan and the Adware.lop threat did not show up. I then followed the path, did a cut and then delete. That got rid of it. However, a check today shows bir 1.exe in the same exact place in local settings/temp. Norton firewall warned me that it was trying to get out of my system and did I want to stop it. I said yes.
Additionally, there is another Adware gator identified by Norton Anti Virus with the path C:\RECYCLERS\S-1-5-21-643571872-2136417557-3852222622-1007\Dc7.dll that I cannot find in my system to delete.
Lastly, when I was in safe mode yesterday and my desktop icons appeared, the "desktop explorer" icon that I originally talked to you about, did NOT show up in safe mode.
I am scared.
Also on 6/20/05 Norton advised that bloodhound.exploit.38 was detected. Their words, repair failed, access denied.
