When trying to connect to the internet by clicking on a shortcut link to the internet I am getting this message:
No connection to the internet is currently available.
I checked my default connection and it is correctly setup and it is set to connect automaticly. The only way I can connect now is to manually connect and then click on a link. I am running ZoneAlarm Pro and Norton AntiVirus. Any ideas why this is broken?
BTW, I just found out that this is not a problem when I get new email messages from within Outlook Express. The automatic connection to the internet works just fine. Now it looks like that the problem has something to do with IE its self.
KevinH, I want to clarify your problem. I have Bellsouth.net and have to click on that icon to get online then click on internet explorer to open my browser. Is this what you mean? If it is I would also love the answer because it has been this way for me for years and I dont even think about it being a problem because I am so used to doing it.
I have exactly the same problem. It also started a couple of days ago. Have tried various reinstalls of my ISP details, and the various options on control panel/internet options. Nothing seems to work.
I can also not get on to the microsoft.com or microsoft.co.uk websites. All other sites are fine. Co-incidence? Virus/spyware?
I am going to try a repair of IE and if that fails, re-install XP.
I am running up to date versions of Norton AntiVirus and ZoneAlarm Pro. Also I have ran Ad-aware and Spybot as well. So... for the most part my machine should be clean.
I also have NAV and Zonelabs so I couldn't believe that it would be a virus/hack.
However, a bit of searching on the newsgroups solved the problem for me.
I have the Google toolbar.
Apparently, it's either a problem with the Valentine's colour scheme that the toolbar switched to on the 14th, or a conflict with the latest security update.
Regardless, I removed the toolbar using add/remove programs and reinstalled it (I forgave them) and everything was OK again.
OK, this is getting interesting. My problem has gone away on it own, I think. Maybe Google sent an update. One other possiblity is MusicMatch 8.2. I had temporarly turned on online CD information function and turned it back off (this was for other reasons than to fix the dialup problem). This may have flipped some sort of switch. Go figure.

At Internet Options, Connections tab, do you have always dial my default connection checked?
