I am running XP. Have been getting "cannot display page" error when surfing in IE. After clicking on link two or three times, it finally comes up. Does anyone know how to resolve this issue?
Also, when checking winsock.dll, I found that there is a 2nd winsock.dll file located in C:\I386. I have tried to rename and delete the file, but XP won't let me. Can you tell me how to rename or get rid of the file to see if that is causing the problem?
The folder c:\I386 contains backup copies of system files (essentially a copy of the I386 folder on the XP CD), they are not used by the system while running (sfc might look there for a replacement if when you run it it finds a corrupted XP file). So whatever the source of your problem, it certainly is not the file in I386.
There may be several reasons for a page not loading. Is it all sites or just particular one(s)? Amongst a number of possibilities, if it is a secure site, it may be your security settings; other times it might be a problem with the web site being down, or the page being unavailable. Difficult to pin down. Are you using a proxy server? sometimes that causes problems.
I am not running on a proxy server. It does not happen all of the time and there is no particular site that only exhibits the problem. For instance if I do a search and click on one of the links, I will get the cannot display page error, by clicking on the same link 2 or 3 more times and it will eventually work. Same thing happens when searching Ebay, might have to click on an item multiple times before it comes up. It has me baffled.
i use
http://www.google.com and
http://www.yahoo.com for testing to see if things are working properly.. do you have the same problems with connecting to those websites? i would not assume that you have a problem just because the search feature at ebay acts screwy, or because you get "page not found" when clicking some unknown link in a list of links from doing a search. however, there are some malware-things that can cause problems with search engines.. it is possible that something like that is causing a problem, if you are having trouble using "search". if you think some malware is causing problems with your using "search", you could try using "cwshredder" which might help.. here is some info, and you can download "cwshredder" from the website
http://www.spywareinfo.com/~merijn/cwschronicles.html incidentally, it is not uncommon to get "page not found".. sometimes clicking "refresh" will bring the webpage up.. sometimes not...
