Installing new RAM

Hi, I recently recieved Black and White 2 which requires 512MB of RAM. Of course, my Dell Dimension 4600 only posseses 256MB. So, I'm upgrading.

Today, I finally got the RAM; unharmed and everything in order. However, I cannot get the system to (I supposse) recognize the RAM. I have, according to this document -- http://support.dell.com/support/edocs/systems/dim4600/en/4600i/sm/parts.htm#1108087 -- cards in slots 1 and 2. Now, where would I put my new 512MB card? Which slot, I mean.

I've read some of the other RAM questions, and I've gone into the BIOS and hit F9. But, it still only registers as 256MB of RAM. Help me, I'm confused!

    Ick... I'm in trouble...

Man... and I was sure I copied everything on the existing RAM cards down...

Hmmm.... wait. Here's the link for the RAM I just bought: http://www.crucial.com/store/partspecs.asp?imodule=CT6464Z335&cpe=AFC-2D4S68503543

It says that it's a DIMM package... but its "feature" is DDR PC2700. So, does that mean I just have to buy one more?

    Thanks!

    AzureRose1,

Your system uses DDR memory, which must be installed in pairs. See this. You referred to instructions for installing an AGP card.

Return the 256MB and get two 128MB modules.

    AzureRose1,

The list of Crucial's memory modules for the 4600 is here and that one isn't on it. I would try to return the 512MB one you have and replace it with two of the 128MB pairs listed at the bottom of the page.

    Hello again.

I bought some RAM from that page (a 1GB model) and I plugged it in.

Now, I hear I'm supossed to press F9 in the BIOS when I install RAM. Assuming this is true, I did so. My undestanding is that it "resets" everything allowing for new hardware to be recognized.

Well, I pressed it, and it didn't do anything. I don't know why.

Also, I JUST have the 1GB model (it's a pair equalling to 1GB) in my computer. However, it seems to be only registering 256MB of RAM. Again, I don't know why.

Even though all of this has occurred, I cannot help but feel like my computer has gotten faster. However, this could possibly be a notion of the mind and nothing more.

    Any suggestions?
