    beaowolf,

What registry key is missing and what was the exact wording of the error message advising you of the fact?

ouch I'd never upgrade a system just clean install it because problems like this will happen.  What I would do is uninstall the previous Dell Support and install the new one.

From a run command (with your XP disc loaded) type:

    sfc /scannow

This should replace those missing entries.

    beaowolf,

There is no site which can scan and repair your installation. A repair reinstall may correct most of the problems you are experiencing. The most recent (the registry problem) is clearly associated with Dell Support 2.0 (which was superseded--see this). System File Checker (sfc /scannow) does nothing to the registry, even had you been able to run it.

The procedure for a repair reinstall are here. This should preserve your perishable data although you will have to update your Windows Critical Updates after it is run.

    Hi again
It seems that I have a lot of  issues at this time with windows xp pro other the the registry keys , my plug n play feature is not working either I have no way of backing up my files and installed programs in order to do a clean install of the OS also there is a very large gap in the add and remove programs list . Will a repair installation help correct these problems if so how do you go about doing the repair . Dose Dell or Microsoft have a site where my system can be scanned and repaired.Any help will be greatly appreciated.

                                                        thanks Beaowolf

Before you do anything further I suggest you do updated scans with AdAware and your anti-virus programs. You have a number of issues which may have a common thread. If your system is clean, next step:

Run the sfc command as previously mentioned. Leave space after the "sfc" segment.

Check Spybot/Recovery to make sure it didn't delete something that caused your registry problem.

Re plug and play, verify it is set to automatic (and started) in services- you may have to reboot after you've made this change; to bring up your services' settings enter this command (from Start|Run):

    services.msc

To verify that plug and play is running (after the restart) go to a command prompt and enter this:

    net start

This lists all the active( aka running) services.

Re original usb (flash drive) problem, check you usb controllers; one or more may require reinstallation/-enabling; yellow or red markings will indicate that.

I may be wrong bit I think you could use this (link) fix as a template for giving permission for the Dell Support program. If you're familiar with editing the registry perhaps browsing to Hkey|Local Machine/Software/Dell, right-clcik on Dell and change the "Permissions" to Full Access to evry known user.

That said I don't know if Dell Support will be any help for you; it appears it can be more trouble than support.
